Ever seince we left, Hillel Davydov has been the acting Rabbi, and he has been doing a fantastic job! Olga Zhukova, who we were close to and even put a Mezuza on her wall, wanted to give her son Matvei a nice Upsherin for his third birthday. So she called Hillel (Gennady) Davydov and he organized the cutting.
It was done in her house, and this is her report:
On the 13th of October, 2009 Stavropol's new jewish organization "Yachad" gave an Upshernish to Matvei Zhukov, who celebrated his third birthday on the 29th of September (On the non-jewish calendar... that's my addition - Zvi).
Upshernish = the first haircut given to a boy of 3 years.
Why is the first haircut given at three years old? The Torah tells us that man is metaphorically like a tree. Trees in Eretz Yisroel (their words, not mine. and I am impressed - Zvi) aren't cut for the first three years.
Therefore the cutting for little Matvei was organized by spiritual leader of our community, Gennady Davydov.
Matvei tasted some honey poured on the Alef beis, symbolizing the start of his Jewish education, and afterward, was blessed by his mother Olga, father Alexander, and Gennady with health and happiness!
Afterwards, Gennady presented Matvei with his own pair of Tzitzis and some toys, which included a little doll Torah. Guests included the Berkun family, Igr Lerner, the Mataev and Filatov families who joined together afterward for a festive meal.

In other good news, Chaim Shimshon started walking. Now I have to buy him skates.
